2026-27 Relaunch and Call for Papers

Essays in History (EiH) is an open access journal for early-career historians. EiH publishes peer-reviewed articles, historiographical essays as well as reviews of the most recent scholarship. Known for its commitment to academic tradition and willingness to embrace innovation, the journal has been staffed by graduate students at the University of Virginia since 1954. Past authors have included the likes of Emory G. Evans, L. Stanley Willis, and Donald R. Sutherland. EiH aims to provide a supportive experience for our editors, authors, and referees, encouraging contributions from a wide array of historical sub-fields and chronologies.
We are pleased to announce a Call For Papers spanning the 2026-27 calendar year. The journal will operate on a continuous publishing model for all accepted works. We estimate a turnaround time of two months from initial submission to first notification. All manuscript authors will receive a detailed correspondence from the Executive Editor or Editorial Board once a final decision on publication has been reached.
Essays in History welcomes submissions from graduate students, scholars who have received their PhD within the last five years, and accomplished undergraduates. Research articles should be in the range of 5,000-10,000 words, exclusive of footnotes. Book reviews should be in the range of 700-1,200 words. Historiographic review essays should be in the range of 2,500-5,000 words.
The journal will accept submissions from September 1, 2026 to November 1, 2026, subject to additional extensions. Submissions will be reviewed on a rolling basis within this window. Manuscripts should be submitted through the website under the header labeled “Start Submission.” Scholars interested in serving as anonymous referees may also register for an account on the website. Referees should be PhD recipients or ABD candidates.
